Forget the Horror Here…

First, some quick updates:

It’s been a while since I’ve written a post - to be fair, I have had a bit (read: a lot) of time on my hands over the past few weeks, but I’ve spent most of my creative energy in trying to complete a poem I’ve been working on for a while. It hasn’t quite come out as I intended it to yet, but I’ve been feeling for a while I should start writing here a bit more regularly, and this post is but a result of that.

To those who know me well, it’s no secret that listening to music is something I enjoy very much. Quite a large chunk of my day is spent with headphones over my ears and me de-stressing with some familiar tunes to keep me company. Although my music tastes vary over time, there are some songs which I just feel like I have a special connection with - which just seem to tug at the heartstrings a little more. I associate these songs with certain moments and experiences, and I feel as though they carry some kind of deeper meaning in the context of my life.

In this short post, I will try to explore for one such song the reason why I am particularly fascinated by it, and what meaning it carries for me. If nothing, I hope you take away a nice music recommendation from this post!

Spanish Sahara - The Foals

“It’s future rust and it’s future dust…”

I was first introduced to this masterpiece a couple of years ago, in the gut-wrenching finale of the tale that was Life is Strange (don’t worry, no spoilers!). The first thing that strikes you about it is how well the song is constructed, just as the plot of an engaging story. Initially, the song starts off slowly, setting the scene with haunting vocals. Without you realising, the music soon picks up the pace, until it achieves that final crescendo, leaving you almost exasperated by the end.

The song is, as explained by the Foals’ lead singer Yannis Phillippakis himself, about getting over a trauma which doesn't quite go away, and rather multiplies into several furies which continue to come back and haunt you.

Losing someone you love is indeed a deep trauma, which comes with a mixture of emotions - sadness, confusion, and sometimes anger. The lyrics of the song hit right close to home, and I am able to relate my own emotions and some tragic memories with the words of the song. Particularly, I lost one of my oldest furry friends only a few months after first being introduced to this stirring melody. Sometimes, it is easy to lose sight of our emotions in the grind of the daily, but the song almost behaves as my bridge to the past, and to the feelings and memories that reside there. Invariably, a listen to Spanish Sahara will evoke those emotions in me and leave my eyes a bit moistened.

As I’ve realised while writing this, there is only so much you can do to describe a song you like. A note is worth a million words though, (And yes, I did just came up with that :P) so do go over and have a listen if you feel convinced enough to give it a try: Foals - Spanish Sahara.

I hope you liked the song (if you hadn't heard it before), and I also hope you enjoyed reading this short little article. If you did, I would appreciate your words of encouragement - I’d love to write similar posts on some of the other songs I enjoy and express what emotions I attach with them.

On another note, I realised I enjoy writing too much to not give enough time to it, and so intend to give my “two cents” a bit more often. If you have any ideas or suggestions for me, do let me know!

Hope you have a good day. Cheers!

Decoding JEE with Soumil Aggarwal (AIR-33 JEE Advanced)

Recently, I caught up with Soumil Aggarwal - an achiever who continued his excellence in competitive exams by securing AIR 33 in the JEE (Advanced) 2020. Besides this, he has also secured AIR 258 in the JEE (Main) 2020, and also won honourable mention at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2019 held at Bath, UK. Soumil completed his JEE preparation with a four-year classroom program at FIITJEE South Delhi. We tried to decode his JEE preparation strategy and understand the story behind his success. Sport & the Allure of the Comeback

Sport & the Allure of the Comeback  Make no mistake about it, the immediate motivation behind writing this piece was the recent masterpiece of an innings handcrafted by the king of his craft, Virat Kohli. It was an innings forged in the most intense of flames - those of pressure and scrutiny, under which many before him have crumbled. In a match against Pakistan, where emotions always ride high, this innings was nothing short of an experience. It is hard to do justice to it with mere words.  And yet, as this experience unfolded and culminated in that sweet, sweet way, I wondered - why this innings ? I cast my mind back to around six years ago. The same player, yet there he was, knocking off centuries every other match and whipping chases akin to this one over midwicket for fun. It was great to watch, sure. Yet, what was it that made me only stupefied back then, and yet emotional and moved today?  It brings to the fore for me, one of the most alluring, and perhaps mo...

5 Things Which Defined My JEE Journey

A fundamental question I thought about before writing this post was – “What will someone take away with them after reading this?” It is a tricky question, because there are hundreds, if not thousands of similar posts, scattered across blogs, QnA sites and YouTube channels. Each gives in complete detail which books to use, how many hours to put in, what is considered ‘enough’ for JEE. There are also people who have secured a better rank than me, and whose inputs are perhaps a bit more valuable than mine. So, I decided to focus a bit more on what made my JEE journey unique – in this post, I will highlight the five things I felt stand out the most out of the last two (and a half, thanks to COVID!) years of my life, and had the most impact on my preparation as well as me as a person. Here goes! 1. Overcoming Tricky Beginnings I took admission into FIITJEE South Delhi’s integrated school program in class 11 th . Ultimately it turned out to be a good decision because it helped me cut a ...
